Solar power is everywhere, and even where you might least expect it. From solar powered malls, cities, and boats, solar power has moved in to virtually every area of our lives. Don’t believe me? Here are three solar powered objects, I’m pretty sure you had no idea existed.

A Solar Powered Satellite

This low-flying satellite can fly in sustained uninterrupted flight for an astounding five years or more at altitudes between 60,000-90,000 feet – all powered by solar. Developed for surveillance and reconnaissance, communications relay and environmental monitoring by the military, it gives new meaning to term “long flight”.

A Solar Powered Bansai Tree

Have a phone to charge? You probably didn’t know that we know have a decorative bonsai tree that can do that. You heard that right, this tree has tiny solar panels on its branches that charge up a battery that you can connect your gadgets to. The battery, gadgets, and wires are all be stored inside the base. And you have to admit, it looks pretty cool.

A Solar Powered Phone

Constructed from PCM, a plastic extracted from recycled water bottles, Samsung’s new “Blue Earth Dream” phone doesn’t have any harmful substances such as Brominated Flame Retardants, Beryllium and Phthalate, and is powered but a small solar panel on the back. Granted, it’s probably not enough power to do a whole lot more than make a call. But, it’s a step in the right direction. Explains Mr. JK Shin, Executive Vice President and Head of Mobile Communication Division of Samsung Electronics, “Samsung’s ‘The Blue Earth Dream’ demonstrates our small but meaningful commitments for the future and our environment.”
